Finance Tracker

What is Finance Tracker?

Finance Tracker is a free web application you can use to (unsurprisingly) track your finances. Its core features include ways of categorising transactions (much like most banking apps - although I'd say much more customisably), charting various spending metrics, and keep clean and organised logs of all transactions even across multiple platforms.

Who built Finance Tracker?

I did! Finance Tracker used to be my go to project each time I'd try out a new tech stack. As I became more confident, each iteration of Finance Tracker would improve. Now that I am settled with a tech stack, I've managed to make this version of Finance Tracker quite feature rich! I've used it in its various forms for the past few years, holding all of my transactions from each bank account since their creation.

After a chat with some friends (about average monthly spend on petrol), I ended up giving some of them a quick demo. Since then, I've onboarded a few users and their feedback has helped make Finance Tracker a less me-focused platform.

Feature Highlights

Importing Existing Transactions

It is very likely that you haven't made it this far in live without ever transacting. It also wouldn't be ideal to start tracking your finances, years into financing. Your previous actions say a lot about likely future ones. To accommodate this, Finance Tracker has a flexible transaction import system - it is very likely compatible with your current online banking transaction export.

Advanced Charting

Finance Tracker has some pretty impressive charts: from detailing how your overall balance, incoming and outgoing vary over a given interval, to comparing this month's categorised spending to your average categorised spending. I've only included a few here, to avoid overloading the page with images.

Multiple Accounts

For some people, knowing the individual balance of each account is much for useful than knowing the combined balance. To accommodate this, a user can have multiple accounts. These accounts track transactions completely separately, but are still combined for most of our charting tools.

Transaction Templates

Personally, these days I quite enjoy entering my transactions manually (as opposed to using our rapid import system ). I find it a good way to really understand where my recent spending has been. However, a lot of my transactions are quite similar (you could say 'templateable') and I found myself entering the same details time and time again. For this reason, I introduced transaction templates.

Transaction templates allow users to create actions to auto-populate their selected fields, with their selected values. In this example, the user creates a transaction template for their Spotify subscription.

Future Plans

Finance Tracker is an extremely feedback driven project, so whether you've used it or not please feel free to reach out and let me know what you like, what you don't, and what you'd like to see added next!
